How Can You Know For Sure You Are Going to Heaven?
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
God loved the world so much that He gave us His Son, Jesus Christ. He showed His love on the cross 2,000 years ago by dying for sinners. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
Well, who is a sinner? A sinner is one who has violated God’s absolute standard of right and wrong. The Bible teaches us everyone has done this and is a sinner. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). “For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not” (Ecclesiastes 7:20).
God is holy and He has commanded us to keep all His commandment and statutes. “That thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commanments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life…” (Deuteronomy 6:2).
However, we do not. Have you ever told a lie? Yes, then you have broken the ninth commandment (Exodus 20:15). The Bible says that one sin makes us guilty. “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all” (James 2:10).
The Law was not given to make us righteous but to show us that we stand guilty before God. “Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin” (Romans 3:19-20).
Because we are sinners, we have been separated from God. Our sin separates us from God. “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear” (Isaiah 59:2).
The penalty for our sin is death. “For the wages of sin is death...” (Romans 6:23a). The Bible speaks about physical death and the second death which is separation from God in the lake of fire (Revelation 20:15).
However, Jesus came to save us from our sins. “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21).
Why did Jesus come to save sinners? The reason is because He loves us. “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins” (I John 4:9, 10).
What must we do in order for Christ to save us? In the Bible, God gives us a simple plan of how to be saved.
First, we must realize we can not do any work to save ourselves. Good works, keeping the Law, baptism, or anything else cannot save you. Jesus Christ is the only Savior. “Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law” (Romans 3:28). “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8, 9).
Salvation is a gift. If you had to work for it, salvation would not be a gift. We are not saved by works but by believing or trusting in Christ. “But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness” (Romans 4:5).
Jesus is the Savior and He died to save you. God loves you so much that He gave His only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to pay for your sins. Jesus shed His blood and died on a cross so that you could be saved and have everlasting life.
In order to be saved you must believe on Jesus as the one who bore your sin, died in your place, was buried, and whom God resurrected. “...Christ died for your sins, according to the Scriptures; And that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures” (I Corinthians 15:3-4). This is called the gospel which means good news. The bad news is that we are sinners separated from God but the good news is that Jesus died for us in order for us to go to heaven.
You can not earn your way to heaven. We are saved by trusting in what Jesus has already done for us. We are to believe on Christ to be saved. “...Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house” (Acts 16:30-31).
Notice in this passage it says we are justified or declared righteous by faith and not by the works of the Law: “Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified” (Galatians 2:16).
Jesus Christ is offering you salvation as a free gift. “...the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
All you must do to receive this gift is to put your faith and trust in Him alone. “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is no other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).
If you would like Jesus to save you and have genuinely chosen to put your trust in Him, you can pray and ask Him to save you. “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God have raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteous; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Romans 10:9-10).
You can tell Him this in prayer: “Dear Jesus, I realize that I am a sinner. I believe that you died to save me from my sin. I now ask you to save me and forgive me of my sin and become my Savior in Jesus name. Amen.” Trusting in Jesus is the most important decision that you can make! Please do not delay! “NOW is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (II Corinthians 6:2).
If you received Jesus as your Savior or if you would like more information about salvation please call and we would be glad to talk with you!
